🌿 What to Expect from Your First Online Counselling Session

Starting counselling can feel like a big step — and for many people, it’s something they’ve been thinking about for a while. You might feel hopeful, nervous, or unsure what to expect. That’s completely normal. Reaching out for support takes courage, and you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.

As an integrative counsellor offering online counselling across the UK, my aim is to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore what’s been going on for you — at your own pace and in a way that feels right for you.

🪴 The first session: getting to know each other

Your first online therapy session is all about getting to know one another. You don’t need to prepare anything — just bring yourself as you are.

We’ll start by talking about what’s brought you to counselling. Some people come with a specific issue, such as anxiety, low mood, relationship challenges, or loss. Others simply have a sense that something isn’t quite right and want space to understand it. There’s no right or wrong reason to start therapy.

I’ll also explain how I work and what you can expect from our sessions — including confidentiality, how online sessions run, and what you can expect from me as your counsellor. You’ll have the chance to ask any questions so you can decide whether this feels like the right fit for you.

🌤 A flexible, integrative approach

As an integrative counsellor, I draw on a range of therapeutic ideas rather than following one fixed approach. This means our sessions can be shaped around what feels most helpful for you and the things you’d like to explore.

Integrative counselling looks at the whole picture — your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and the experiences that have shaped you. It offers space to notice patterns, understand yourself more deeply, and explore new ways of coping and connecting.

There’s no single method or formula — we’ll find together what works best for you, at a pace that feels right.

💻 Meeting online

All sessions take place online, allowing you to access counselling from the comfort and privacy of your own space — whether that’s your home, office, or a quiet spot where you feel at ease.

Many people find online therapy more flexible and convenient, especially if they have busy schedules or prefer to open up from familiar surroundings.

🌱 After your first session

It’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions afterwards — relief, tiredness, or uncertainty. Counselling can stir up feelings, especially when you start opening up about things you may have been carrying alone.

You might find it helpful to take a few quiet moments afterwards — perhaps a walk, a cup of tea, or some time to reflect.

💬 A gentle reminder

You don’t have to tell me everything in the first session, and you don’t need to know exactly what you want from counselling straight away. This is a process we build together, one conversation at a time.

🌼 A final word

If you’re thinking about counselling, know that even considering it is an act of self-care. The first session isn’t about fixing everything — it’s about beginning a supportive, understanding dialogue that can help you move towards clarity and emotional wellbeing.
